How to make and edit a work

One story is one work. Every work has one canvas, and the story's memos and chapters all live inside it.

About the work

In the work's settings, About the work is where you write what runs through the whole story. What it's about, its theme, tone and style, era and setting, default point of view: things that stay the same from chapter to chapter. Write it however you like.

Any AI you connect reads this text first every time it reads the work. The tone and point of view you set here guide the whole conversation without you having to say them again.

Rural gentry society in early 19th-century England. Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy break through each other's pride and prejudice. A light, sharp satire of a society where marriage, money and class are tangled together. Third person, mostly staying close to Elizabeth.

Things you deal with one at a time, like characters or places, don't belong crammed into About the work. Write them as memos. Only memos can be placed in chapters and connected with relationships. How to set a point of view for a chapter or an event is in Chapters and plot.

Example works

Examples are classics already laid out on a PenPick canvas. Pick one under Examples in your library and a copy is added as your own work. Change anything you like and the original isn't affected. Add the same example again and you get another copy, as it was at the start.

Number of works

The Free plan holds up to 3 works, and an example you added counts as one. The Plus plan has no limit. Works in the trash don't count.

If you move to a lower plan and have more works than the limit, no work gets deleted. You can still open and edit them all. Until you're back under the limit, only making a new work, adding an example and restoring from the trash wait.

Bringing in a manuscript

If you already have a manuscript, paste it into the AI you connected and ask it to lay the manuscript out on the canvas. A connected AI doesn't make new works, so make the work in PenPick first.

Read the manuscript I pasted and lay out its characters, places and events on my PenPick canvas.

Whether you can hand it over as a file, and how much it reads at once, depends on the AI app you use. Paste a long manuscript a few chapters at a time. In apps that support prompts, like Claude, you can also pick the ready-made prompt “Build a blueprint from a text.”

Trash

A deleted work stays in the trash for 30 days. You can restore it during that time. After 30 days, or once you delete it permanently from the trash, its memos and chapters are all gone and can't be restored.
